New reports have emerged in China that state the 2011 World Cyber Games will be hosted in South Korea. This represents something of a u-turn when it had been stated that the event would be hosted in one of three Chinese cities, Shanghai looking the most likely.
The publication that has revealed these changes, tatazu.com, is said to have close ties to inside sources and that this information is to be taken as accurate. However, with similar things having been said regarding Shanghai it's obvious why some are still keen to wait and see how it pans out.
One cause of conflict does seem to be the reason behind the change. Tatazu had reported that the decision behind going back go China was because the WCG were impressed with how the 2009 event, held in Chengdu, had went. However, there has been little explanation for the sudden change and the decision to move the event to South Korea, a country that has already hosted the event four times previously.
Cadred.org spoke with an inside source who wished to remain anonymous and they said that in their opinion the decision was likely cost based. The event in Los Angeles had proved extremely costly and was done more as a celebration for the tenth birthday. In a bid to cut costs while still delivering a premier e-sports event the decision to move to South Korea, where the organisation is based, has been taken.
